The Must-Have Gear for Your Next Motorcycle Camping Trip

There's nothing quite like the freedom of motorcycle camping when summer rolls around. Whether you're dreaming of a weekend trip or a cross-country adventure, hitting the road on two wheels offers an unparalleled escape. You simply explore, find your spot, pitch your tent and you’re home.

That being said, being a two-wheeled nomad requires a bit of careful planning. You need to make sure you have everything you need without compromising on mobility. We've been there, battling with bulky gear, poor packing, and restless nights. That’s why we’ve put together a quick rundown of our go-to kit so you can be a proper happy camper.

Tents

First on the list is your on-the-road real estate - the all-important tent. The beauty of motorcycle camping is the flexibility to pitch a tent almost anywhere. You need something that packs down small but still offers enough space for a comfortable night’s sleep. Consider a two-person tent if you prefer to keep most of your gear inside for security, or a one-man bivvy is a great option if you’re happy leaving your belongings on the bike.

We’re a big fan of GeerTop tents; they’re lightweight and compact, yet hardy enough to withstand the Aussie outback. Sleeping outdoors does mean being at the mercy of the elements, so a reliable tent is essential. While rain isn't a frequent occurrence here, you don't want to be caught off guard by a sudden shower at 4 in the morning and GeerTop tents are fully waterproof. They’re also a reasonable enough price that they don’t break the bank.

Sleep Systems

Now you’ve got your shelter sorted, it’s time to figure out those little extras that go into giving you the best night’s sleep. Rest is crucial for staying focused on the road, so invest in a quality sleep system. This includes a sleeping bag, mat or cot and a pillow if you prefer something more luxurious than a rolled-up jacket.

If space is limited, then you can’t beat a sleeping mat. Designed for superior comfort, the Pélion Zos has a unique diamond cell pattern that limits movement while you sleep. It’s also self-inflating to make setting up a breeze (and puff-free!). If you’ve got a bit more room in your luggage, a cot keeps you off the cold, hard ground so you can rest easy. Both Pélion and Helinox offer lightweight solutions that hold a fair bit of weight.

Once you’re out of the elements, you’ll need something to keep you snug at night. Sea to Summit sleeping bags may be an investment, but they're well worth it. Lightweight yet warm, they're perfect for those who value both comfort and weight reduction. Filled with down for temperature regulation and backed by a lifetime guarantee, they’re a reliable choice for any adventure.

Cooking & Dining

Dining under the stars is a quintessential part of motorcycle camping. While dehydrated or freeze-dried meals offer a convenient option, a cooked meal can be a rewarding experience. To prepare your own food, you'll need a basic kitchen setup, including a stove, pots, pans, and utensils. For a compact and lightweight solution, consider collapsible utensils, or if space is less of an issue, opt for aluminium cookware that can be used over an open fire.

Water

Staying hydrated is a must, especially when exploring the outback. Even if you're planning to stay at campsites, having enough water on hand is a no-brainer. RotoPax offers a range of water container sizes, so you can pack just the right amount for your adventure.

Camp Chairs

After a long day in the saddle, it’s nice to hop off the bike and into something comfy. Lightweight, but sturdy Pélion camp chairs are big enough to kick back in and strong enough to hold up to 120kg - no collapsing in the dirt here. The Hedra weighs a mere 1300g and the Kata is even lighter at just 900g. Plus they come with their own storage bags, making them easy to stash on your bike and take anywhere.

Time to Pack It Up

Now you’ve picked out all your gear, you’ve got to figure out how to transport it. There are tons of options for soft and hard luggage, it just depends on your personal preference. We’re big fans of ADVWORX luggage, which comes in six sizes to suit your needs. With their easy roll-top design and waterproof outer, they keep your gear secure and dry. The air-purge valve is perfect for saving space meaning there’s plenty of room for all the essentials. You can even save money with the two saddlebags and duffel bag bundle.

So there you have it! With this gear list, you’ll be well-prepared to hit the open road and embrace the freedom of motorcycle camping.
